Moyer Returns to Home State to Lead Burlington Schools
Dr. David Moyer is beginning his second year as the superintendent for the Burlington Area School District. Moyer came to Burlington after spending the previous 12 years as an administrator in Illinois. He was the assistant superintendent for Community High School District 117 in Lake Villa from 2006-2010, the principal at McHenry East High School from 2003-2006, the assistant principal at Rock Falls High School from 2001-2003, and the athletic and activities coordinator for Huntley High/Middle School from 1998-2001. Moyer began his career as a middle school English teacher at Holy Name School in his hometown of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1988.
Moyer earned his doctorate from Northern Illinois University in May of 2004. His dissertation Illinois Public School Superintendents and Teacher Association Presidents' Perceptions of Knowledge and Skills and Group Performance-Based Pay is particularly relevant in light of recent political developments in the state of Wisconsin. He also completed his Superintendent's Endorsement and a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University. Moyer earned a Master's degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in English.
Prior to returning to K-12 education in 1998, Moyer spent several years as a college baseball coach. He guided Sheboygan North High School to the WIAA State Summer Championship game in 1988, and followed up that campaign with a state title in 1989. He left teaching to coach the pitchers at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky, and returned to Wisconsin in 1991 when he was named the head baseball coach at Lakeland College in Sheboygan. He spent seven years as the school's head coach, being named Lake Michigan Conference Coach of the Year in 1998. While at Lakeland, Moyer also performed a variety of other duties, serving as Associate Athletic Director, working in the Admissions Office, and teaching several classes while advising freshman students. During that time, he managed the Sheboygan A's of the Wisconsin State League for eight summers, leading the team to its first-ever championship in 1991 and again in 1997. He was tabbed WSL Manager of the Year in each of those seasons.
In addition to his responsibilities for BASD, Moyer serves as an adjunct instructor for Aurora University and teaches classes, oversees action research projects, and supervises administrative internships in Wisconsin and Illinois. While at District 117, Moyer was the Assistant Coordinator for Cohort Development in Lake County.
Throughout his career, Moyer has been privileged to present at several state and national conferences on assessment and organizational alignment. He has been published in professional journals on multiple occasions. He is a member of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators and serves on its Professional Improvement Committee. He is also a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of School Administrators, serves on the Burlington Library Board of Directors, and is a member of the Burlington Rotary Club.
Moyer is the author of the novel Life and Life Only and several other short stories and essays. He reviews books for The New York Journal of Books and Joseph's Reviews.
A former drummer, Moyer is an avid Bob Dylan fan and has seen him perform live on 30 different occasions. In addition to his love of music, Moyer reads extensively. For leisure, he retreats to his grill and seeks comfort in his landscaping and the voice of Brewers' radio announcer Bob Uecker.
Moyer and his wife, Donna, have five children, ages 10-20.
