September Minutes

PTO Meeting Minutes

Sept. 21, 2011

Attendance – Denise Cowan, Danyel Hayes, Lisa Wasik, Alisa Glessing, Jenny Matson, Katie Jost, Alyson Davis, Donna Daniels, Christine Andersen, Stacy Stewart, Sarah Behnke and Mary Raboine.

I.      President’s Report – Just for clarification PTO meetings are for discussing/deciding PTO business.  If you have issues with any other member of the staff a PTO meeting is not the place to vent these grievances.  Thank you!

II.     Treasurer’s Report

A.     Savings -$4,094.42

B.     Checking-$4356.78

This is significantly less than we have started with in years past. This makes it extremely important that we all pitch in and fund raise.

III.   Secretary’s Report – Denise introduced herself as the new secretary but had nothing new to report.

IV.   Principal’s Report – It has been a great start to a new year.  There has been lots of positive feedback from the city police and parents as well as students about the new afternoon pick-up procedure.

MAP testing is new for everyone this year so there will be a few difficulties but they are working through it.  COMPASS testing will coincide with MAP testing.  Teachers are working hard on their enrichment committees and staff development.

Parents are asked to please be respectful of Dyer students trying to cross Kendall Street at the corner of State & Kendall as you are leaving Cooper school in the afternoon.  Also please be mindful of the new crosswalk on Kendall St. Parents and children are still crossing even after the crossing guard goes in.

With 3 weeks of school under our belts, parents should be saying good-bye to their children on the playground and NOT entering the building.  If you need to enter the building please enter the doors off of Conkey Street and report to the office to sign in. Thank you!

There have been many changes to the school this year from paint on the walls to new computer labs.

Classrooms or the library will no longer be able to be used for afterschool or evening functions unless a staff member is present due to school property being damaged or disappearing.

V.    Old Business

A.         DVD/VCR combo units – Are still being looked into.

B.         iPads – 9 new iPads have been purchased and will be delivered to the school next week.

C.         Other Old Business –

         1.         Chairperson needed for Market Day – Stacy Stewart volunteered

         2.         Chairperson needed for Sentry Receipts – Sarah Behnke volunteered

         3.         Chairperson needed for Popcorn Friday – Sarah Behnke volunteered for this also

         4.         Box Tops for Education - Please remember as you are shopping online go to www.boxtops4education.com first and shop through the Marketplace of that website. Our school will earn Box Tops for the shopping you already do.

VI.   Current/New Business

A.    Fall Book Fair-Ice cream social time change – The Fall Book Fair is set for Friday Oct. 21, 2011. In conjunction there will be an Ice Cream Social. $1.00 donation for an ice cream sundae.  Volunteers will be needed.

B.     Fundraising ideas for 2011-2012 school year.

1.                  This year we are going to try something new… Pies from the Elegant Farmer. Preliminary info states that pies will sell for approximately $15.00. $5 of which would go to the PTO. Pies in the store sell for $14.99. We are hoping to run this fundraiser in conjunction with Thanksgiving and/or Christmas

2.                  Possible “Penny War”

C.     Classroom Ed Fund-cash or gift card – Instead of trying to get the teachers gift cards from  a lot of different places, cash will be given to each teacher for extra classroom supplies and activities.

D.    Email addresses in Skyward (privacy Policy) – Can email addresses in Skyward be shared with the PTO?  Due to the privacy policy email addresses given to the school cannot be given to the PTO. If you would like the PTO to communicate directly with you via email you will need to voluntarily share your email address with us.  And in accordance with privacy policy we DO NOT share email addresses unless given permission by you.  Because the school cannot share email address they have agreed to send any reminders the PTO may need to send without sharing any private information.

E.     What is the ETA on the Skyward fix? – Mrs. Anderson was not aware that there was any problem with viewing Cooper students on Skyward.  It will be looked into.

F.     Review scheduled dates with Chris to verify any conflicts.

H.    EIN or Tax id number for new accounts at Educators – We are going to move our checking and savings accounts from Chase Bank to Educator’s Credit Union.

I.      School Store – Rachel Fox is going to be the Chairperson for the school store again this year.  The school store will be open for business the first Friday of every OTHER month. Those dates being Oct. 7, Dec. 2, Feb.3, April 5 (Thursday because Spring Break starts on Friday) and June 1.

I.      President’s Report

A.                  Fundraiser started and will be running through Nov. 2.  Pie will arrive frozen. We chose to go to the Elegant Farmer to pick up our own pies so we could pick our own date and time.  They could not give us a definite time when they would deliver. There will be a caravan of PTO volunteers going to pick up the Cooper order.

B.                  Parent/Teacher Conferences – PTO will serving the teachers dinner on BOTH nights during conferences. One night will be Chili and Baked Potatoes while the other night will be a Taco Bar.  Denise, Lisa and Stacy will be available to set up during the day. Teachers are asked to use the refrigerator in the Health office so the Teacher lounge refrigerator will be available for PTO dinner.

II.         Treasure’s Report – still short on funds

A.                  Checking - $2,584.27 with some outstanding checks

B.                  Savings - $4,094.92

III.         Secretary’s Report – Cooper School Directory went out to those who supplied information to the PTO.

IV.         Principal’s Report – Mrs. Anderson not present.

A.                  Donna Daniels wanted to say Thank You on behave of the teachers for the classroom money given to the teachers.

B.                  Learning Fair is set to take place in February, perhaps the 21st or the 28th. Donna asked that the PTO sponsor this event.  She anticipates a cost of approximately $100.  At an earlier meeting, Peter Turke showed some interest in helping out with this event.

V.         Old Business

A.                  DVD/VCR combo units purchased?  No, these items have been put on hold pending the finances. They will be discussed at a later date.

B.                  New iPads were in fact delivered to the school

C.                  Book Fair/Ice Cream Social - Ice cream is on order for the Ice Cream Social. Lisa Wasik will be getting the topping.  Book fair all set to go!

D.                  Other Old Business – no other old business

VI.         Current/New Business

A.                  At the November meeting we will be meeting with possible vendors for the Spring Fundraiser.  All are encouraged to attend… There will be samples from the different vendors!  The meeting for that month will start at 6:00pm to accommodate the vendor presentations.  Some of the ideas for Spring fundraisers are Mr. Z’s and O&H Kringle… if you have any other ideas please contact the PTO.

B.                  Market Day

1.         Market Day offers samplings.  They come to a family fun event and give samples.  The samples they give must be purchased by the PTO.  It was decided that samples should be free and we choose not to pay for sample.

2.         New Family Kit – Market Day also offers for purchase a kit to send out to new families in your school. For approximately $25 Stacy could get enough kits for all the new students to introduce them to Market Day. It was decided to give Stacy the $25. That $25 comes out of our Market Day profits so there is no cash exchanging hands.

C.                  Other new business

1.         Parents would like advance notice when the school store will be open.  Mark your calendars, the school store days are Oct 7, Dec 2, Feb 3, April 5 and June 1.

VII.         Meeting adjourned at 7:45
