Welcome!

motto: Share Care Dare to Do Your Best! Make a Difference
Mrs. Joyce Uglow

Dear Parents and Friends of Dr. Edward G. Dyer Intermediate School,

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I extend a warm welcome to Dyer Intermediate School.  Dyer is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) committed to each and every student as we develop 21st century knowledge and skills for every learner... one child at a time.  As a PLC, our focus is on learning, collaboration, and results.

Our motto at Dyer Intermediate School exemplifies our mission.  Make a Difference:  Care, Share, Dare to Do Your Best!  Team building and service to others are two of the examples of our collaborative efforts as we facilitate academic, physical, and emotional growth in our tweens.

Dyer is home to 465+ bright and eager learners in grades 4-6.  We are proud to host classrooms that approach education through looping with the students from 5th to 6th grade, a public school Montessori program for levels 4, 5, and 6, and through a more traditional approach.  We have students grouped into homerooms and "houses."   The house structure is in place in order provide a smaller number (2 or 3) teachers for each student for core academic classes.

Our school holds high academic and behavioral expectations for everyone, which is balanced within an environment where it is safe to take risks, sometimes making mistakes, and growing from them.  The key to Dyer's success through the years has been the strong partnership between students, families, and faculty.  Our "Full Value Agreement" helps students as they encounter obstacles.  (1)  Be here!  (2) Be safe!  (3) Be honest!  (4) Set goals!  (5) Let go and move on!  The "We Stand Up " posters seen everywhere in the school help our tweens to remember that bullying is not acceptable.  We stand up together as active bystanders to show that bullying is non-negotiable.  We value the fine arts and exploratory classes because we value the whole child.  Students are invited to join band, orchestra, and choir at Dyer.

STUDENTS - In setting high and appropriate expectations, we believe in the unlimited potential of our students.  Students are afforded rigorous educational experiences that are complemented by rich after school club opportunities, all within the philosophy of the least restrictive environment.  We are very proud of our students in both their individual and collective achievements and awards.  Each trimester Dyer students who earn A and B grades are recognized with an Academic Achievement Award.  Those students who consistently turn in quality work are recognized with a Homework First Award.  Being on time and at school everyday is a work habit that is highly encouraged.  The students who have perfect attendance are honored with a Perfect Attendance Award.

PARENTS - At Dyer, parents are encouraged to become active members of our learning community through communication with teachers, volunteering during the school day, and taking on leadership and committee opportunities in our PTSO, and at Fun Nights.  We adhere to the philosophy that active involvement on the part of family members serves to strengthen and enhance the learning experiences for students.  Family Access is one way that our parents/guardians can log into their own student's gradebook to monitor assignments turned in and the grades earned.  Family Fun Night and PTSO are way that families can be actively involved in their tween's schooling.

FACULTY - Dyer Intermediate School is served by an exceptionally dedicated and talented faculty/staff, all who are committed to the district philosophy of continuous improvement within the structure of a Professional Learning Community.  As a faculty, we see ourselves as both teachers and learners.

Dyer Intermediate School welcomes you to become part of this dynamic relationship of students, families, and faculty.  We look forward to working closely with you during your child's time with us.  If I can be of assistance, please feel free to call at 262-763-0220 or use email.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Joyce Uglow, Principal
