Students are responsible for their behavior. There may be times when an incident occurs in which a student makes a poor choice in their school day but this usually can be easily worked through with the teacher and student. Some students need more support from the teacher and may require a more individualized plan in addition to the classroom based behavior management system the teacher has for the class.
Students may have difficulty with their attention span and ability to focus, therefore needing support to help them learn to self-monitor their behavior. The example monitors may be useful tools to target individualized needs. Teachers may implement these with a small percentage of students to assist them in being more successful in working toward the child controlling and being more responsible for their own behavior. With student education and parent communication/support at home, a teacher can develop plans to foster independence and self control from the child.
If a child is having great difficulty with attention and focus, it is important to work as a team and involve other support staff to determine specific plans to help them succeed.
