In Spring 2018, the independent research firm, School Perceptions, conducted a community-wide survey to gather feedback around long-term facility planning for the District. There were 1,849 responses (18% of those who received the survey). Feedback from this survey influenced the board's decision making.
A few highlights:
- 74% of ALL residents supported developing a plan based on survey feedback and ask for voter support through another referendum. The rest selected "do nothing at this time" (13%) or needed more information (13%).
- 69% of ALL residents said they support the District exploring a referendum that provides funding to address the goals of school security, facility maintenance and address the needs at Karcher Middle School, with 51% of ALL residents supporting the board taking action as soon as possible.
- When asked about the specific components of a potential referendum, ALL residents supported an investment in district-wide maintenance (59%) and school safety (70%), with less support for remodeling of elementary schools (41%). When asked about addressing Karcher Middle School, responses were mixed with building a new school receiving the most support (45%). Other options included address maintenance only (20%), address maintenance with renovation (21%), do nothing (13%), maintenance and replace oldest section (17%), and not sure (14%). People could select more than one option.
- The tax tolerance question showed a willingness for the district to spend up to $40-50 million.
