Here are some of the questions that have been asked by families living in the Burlington Area School District about participating in JEDI Virtual School. JEDI Virtual School is a separate organization that serves 17 districts in Wisconsin and therefore is not in sync with BASD, but compliments and works with BASD to keep students on pace.
If I start with JEDI can I come back to BASD?
Yes, you can. However, we STRONGLY encourage families to make the commitment to stay for a full semester for several reasons. First, it is just more educationally sound. Second, after September 11, the district will be charged the full semester tuition rate of $1692.50 per student which means dropping out creates a financial loss for the district.
Is there a Montessori option for JEDI? Will spots on Montessori be saved for students if they use JEDI?
JEDI is its own program separate from Montessori. Students in Montessori will have their spot saved for the 20-21 year if they decide to return.
How does JEDI handle IEPs, 504s, ESL, and other supports needed by students?
JEDI will work with families and students who need accommodations and supports in order to be successful and will follow the IEP. However, it is important to note that these students are still BASD students and BASD is responsible for the IEP. This is similar for the other areas of support at well, including ESL.
What technology will the student need to participate in JEDI?
Students need a computer (not phone or tablet) and Internet access. BASD students can use their BASD-issued Chromebook for JEDI. Chromebooks will be provided for 4K and 5K students, too. BASD’s technology department will be able to help students with Chromebook problems (and may need to unblock some applications). If families don’t have the Internet, BASD will work with the family to help them gain access (this is asked on the commitment form).
What are JEDI's Accelerated Offerings?
There is no grade acceleration per se, but students can move as quickly as they wish through material. JEDI teachers, like all teachers, are able to provide extended enrichment for those students who need more of a challenge. Jedi offers honors courses and Advanced Placement Classes. JEDI courses listed on the student’s BHS transcript.
What courses does JEDI offer?
JEDI Course Catalogs: Elementary Level Middle School Level High School Level
JEDI offers STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math), Advanced Art, Electives (such as typing and sewing), Languages: German, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, French, Latin, ASL, and much more depending on the grade level.
What is the Student-Teacher Relationship in JEDI?
Students work with a teacher that teaches the material and is available for questions.
What is the cost for JEDI?
JEDI is free to BASD families. Families do still need to register with BASD and BASD registration fees, but there are no other fees for JEDI.
Can I switch to JEDI after I have started with BASD?
Yes, families can transition to JEDI at any point.
Can I take any face to face classes with BASD?
Students can take up to two face to face classes with BASD. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the classes.
If my child participates in JEDI can they participate in BASD's extracurricular activities?
Yes, they can.
What are the curriculum standards for JEDI?
Both BASD and JEDI follow the same Wisconsin academic standards, but establish their own timeframes for teaching the curriculum. Think of it as two district in Wisconsin - they both teach the same curriculum, but perhaps not in the same sequence. For 7-12, JEDI aligns with requirements set by BASD (to meet graduation requirements).
