Wisconsin winters can be legendary. Here is a review of the process we use to determine weather-related school closures. And, some weather-related reminders, too.
School Closure Announcements
BASD announces school closures through a Skylert message sent via our phone system (update phone numbers in Skyward). School closure information is also posted on the district website and social media. We notify local TV and radio stations to post on their school closing lists.
How Decisions are Made
We monitor the weather closely and will make a school closure decision as quickly as possible. When the forecast predicts that weather might impact the safety of students and staff arriving at school, we actively assess the situation throughout the night and early morning with the goal of making a school closure decision by 5:00 am. Our process gets underway at 3:45 am (or earlier) with a webinar facilitated by the National Weather Service, our partners at the bus company assess local road conditions, and school personnel evaluates conditions at the schools (such as whether is there power and heat/is everything safe). At 4:15 am, area superintendents discuss by phone the localized impact any pending decisions might have.
Most commonly, we close school when road conditions are unsafe or for extreme cold. For cold weather, the major consideration is the wind chill factor. If the wind chill factor during school hours generates a Wind Chill Warning (-35 sustained wind chill) as issued by the National Weather Service, we will most likely close for the day. Generally speaking, we will hold school during a Wind Chill Advisory.
If, as a parent, it is in the best interest of your child to attend school based on your assessment of the weather, we will excuse your child’s absence. Please contact the school office to report the absence due to inclement weather.
Why not a 2-hour delay?
Having school starts 2-hours late is not a good option for several reasons. First, BASD bus transportation uses a double run to save money. This is why our secondary schools start an hour before our elementary schools. Many of the drivers have other day jobs, which means they would be unable to drive the bus if we had a 2-hour delay. Also, working parents have spoken out against using a two-hour delay as they are not able to go to work two hours late.
Why not just run virtually?
While operating virtually is now an option, it is no substitute for our in-person learning environment. From an educational perspective, we believe this option should be used when it is the best logistical solution.
Dress for Weather
Please help your student(s) dress appropriately for the weather. Especially for younger kids who will want to go outside for recess.
