Meeting Five: August 24, 2020
At this meeting, two options were presented and the committee finalized which option to recommend to the school board. Mark Roffers shared a recap on the feedback from past options with Option B having the greatest support, Option C having the least support and Option A in the middle. The committee suggested four concepts to explore. Two other concepts were developed into Options D and E that will be reviewed tonight and two concepts would cause an imbalance in enrollment and not utilize building capacity (and therefore were not pursued).
Mark Roffers provided highlights around Option D:
- It moves enough students to Dyer without moving too many kids away from other schools.
- Socioeconomic neighborhood distribution
- It shows contiguous attendance areas for Cooper, Lyons Center, Waller, and Winkler.
- Fewer students attend Dyer, but Waller and Cooper are close to capacity
Overall, committee members agreed that this option met criteria. There were some questions about enrollment compared to capacity.
Mark Roffers provided highlights around Option E:
- Option E has the fewest number of students changing schools.
- The attendance area for Dyer includes neighborhood around Dyer, Eagle Lake, and northeast Browns Lake.
The committee members agreed, for the most part, that this option met the criteria. There was a desire to increase the number of Dyer students to get closer to capacity.
The next step was to narrow the options. The majority of the committee agreed to eliminate options A and C. Then, there was a discussion of the pros/cons of the remaining options. No option would cause or prevent a financial impact more than another.
Option B
PROS: Eagle Lake (busing) all together, equitable, Dyer students not crossing major road, Problems in A fixed in B, Enrollment evenly distributed (none at capacity)/Building utilization even. Map makes sense (logically grouped together)
CONS: More kids changing attendance areas
Option D
PROS: Less impact on some neighborhoods, Equitable, Eagle Lake together, Dyer walkers won't cross a major road
CONS: Potential long bus ride for neighborhoods 21 and 22.
Option E
PROS: Least impact on the students (lowest impact), Same pros (road),
CONS: Not as equitable compared to Option B & D. Uses the least amount of Dyer capacity, while others are closer to capacity.
Through two rounds of voting, Option D received the greatest support (9 out of 11 members). When the school board hears the proposal, the will see all of the options. Some school board members have been attending meetings and have followed the work of the committee.
