Coronavirus Health Protocol
Refer to the Fall 2020 Health Information webpage for details about BASD's health practices. This YouTube video highlights why risk mitigation is important in a way that is easy for children to understand. COVID-Dashboard Link.
Highlights:
- ABSENCES. Please don’t send students with symptoms to school and avoid people who are showing symptoms. Students must remain home for at least 10 days since first symptoms (see below) began AND be fever-free for 3 days without using fever-reducing medication AND improvement of symptoms.
- SYMPTOMS. Stay home if ill with any ONE of these symptoms: COUGH (new or worsening), TEMPERATURE (100 degrees or higher/chills), DIARRHEA or VOMITING, new LOSS of TASTE/SMELL. Stay home if ill with any TWO of these symptoms: Headache, Muscle or Body Aches, Nausea, Sore Throat, Runny Nose/Congestion, and Unusual Fatigue.
- COVID TEST RESULTS: If tested for ANY reason, stay home until the test results come back. A negative test allows the individual to return to school/work. A positive test means the individual needs to isolate.
- COVID POSITIVE: Notify the Director of Health Services Jill Dreger. Be prepared to share close contacts. Individuals testing positive for COVID must isolate for 10 days since the symptoms began. Flier: Next steps after COVID-19 diagnosis
- CLOSE CONTACTS: Individuals identified as a close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID need to quarantine. See quarantine guidelines (effective December 9, 2020). If the individual starts showing symptoms while in quarantine, it is recommended that the individual get a COVID test. If it is determined that a significant number of students and staff will need to quarantine, the district may shift to virtual learning for classes. Flier: Next steps for Close Contacts
- NON-CLOSE CONTACTS: Individuals who live WITH people in quarantine can continue to participate in activities (school, work, activities).
Quarantine and return to school and sports:
If a person is identified as a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case and need to quarantine:
- 14 day quarantine is preferred. The last day of contact with the COVID-19 positive person counts as day 0. Quarantine goes through day 14 and return to school and sports is day 15. Example: Date of Contact is Feb 1. Return to school and sports is Feb 16.
- 10 day quarantine is acceptable. The last day of contact with the COVID-19 person counts as day 0. Quarantine goes through day 10. Return to school may occur on day 11 as long as they have had NO symptoms. The student must continue to monitor daily for any symptoms, consistently use a mask, practice social distancing and avoid gatherings. Example: Date of Contact is Feb 1. Return to school is Feb 12.
When can the student athlete return to sports? Due to the need to social distance and avoid gatherings, if athletes choose to return to school using the 10 day quarantine the student athlete may return to school on day 11, however, they may not scrimmage or play in games until day 15. On days 11-14, the student athlete MAY be allowed to warm up and stretch with the team as long as masks are worn and 6 feet distance is maintained by teammates and coaches at all times. Individual skill work may also take place during practice assuming the student athlete wears masks and practices social distancing. If an entire team (level) is quarantined, days 11-14 described above may not apply. Example: Date of Contact is Feb 1. Return to school is Feb 12. Return to practice with restrictions is Feb 12. Return to scrimmages and games is Feb 16.
This Welcome Health Letter shares information about ensuring your student is healthy for school, how to call in absences, health room procedures, and more BUT the absence protocol was updated with new Department of Health guidelines that came out after school started. Thank you for helping the district provide a healthy environment in our schools.
