Compassionate Care for All Students
Burlington Area School District Special Education programs meet the academic, social, emotional, physical, and/or communication needs of individual children where they are and gives them the tools to progress in a respectful and nurturing environment in order to participate as fully as possible in their community through:
- Early identification, focused intervention and ongoing assessment to inform instruction.
- Fostering parent orientation, advocacy and ongoing involvement.
- Integrated, proactive programming and training models.
- The use of a variety of methods, techniques, and programs that are research based and data driven.
- Ongoing communication, accountability and support among and between students, all staff and parents/guardians.
- Creative, flexible and open problem solving.
- The development of effective, efficient and financially viable options.
- Collaborative transition among and between the schools and into the community.
Special Education Program
Burlington Area School District provides a full range of Special Education services to students with handicapping conditions. Students are served whenever possible in their home school. Certain low incidence programs are offered at limited sites.
- Early Childhood services and supports are offered at Dyer and Cooper Elementary schools, in addition to area daycare centers.
- Speech/Language services and supports are offered at all schools including the private schools located in Burlington.
- Project Active Citizen (PAC), which is a Beyond 18 program. In collaboration with Waterford Union High School, the PAC House provides functional life skill learning in a residential setting to help this age level of special education students become responsible citizens in the community.
- Project WIN (What I Need) provides students with significant behavioral and mental health disabilities an alternative learning environment.
- A Bilingual Engagement Coordinator is available to assist Spanish-speaking families with the special education process.
