Academic and Career Planning (ACP) refers to both a process that helps students engage in academic and career development activities as well as a product that is created and maintained for students’ academic, career, and professional development.
ACP is a student-driven, ongoing process that actively engages students, enabling them to:
- Understand their own interests, strengths, values, and learning styles
- Create a vision of their future
- Develop individual goals
- Prepare a personal plan for achieving their vision and goals
Academic and Career Planning equips students and their families with tools to make informed choices about postsecondary education and training as it leads to careers. Burlington Area School District provides career awareness, career explorations, and career planning activities within the educational experiences. These experiences ensure that students have the best chances of creating a realistic picture of what they need to do and which routes to take to achieve their dreams.
Starting in Kindergarten and throughout the elementary school years, teachers will introduce various career opportunities to students. In 5th grade, students will participate in a Career Conference with one of the school counselors. Students in 6th grade participate in Career Academy - a series of 16 30-minute lessons. Families receive information on these activities.
Middle school students complete interest/skill inventories in Xello to begin the process of considering which career fields may be a good fit. Students research careers of interest to learn about what education or training is required. This information helps to inform the freshmen course scheduling.
By high school, students have ACP conferences with their school counselor. Students create an ACP portfolio and are introduced to Inspire Wisconsin. They continue with Xello and take steps toward a solid plan for their career after graduation.
