Dyer Elementary History
Dyer Elementary School is named after Dr. Edward G. Dyer. Dr. Dyer settled in Burlington and served as one of Burlington’s first physicians for 40 years. He believed that slavery was wrong and courageously took part in the underground railroad.
Edward G. Dyer Elementary School opened in 1964 as Burlington’s Junior High for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Later, it was renamed Burlington Middle School. Beginning in 2000-2001 students in grades 4, 5, and 6 attended (dedication on August 29, 2000). From 2001-2021, the school served as an intermediate school for students in grades 5 and 6 and the upper levels of the district’s Montessori program. In Fall 2021, Dyer Elementary School started serving students in grades 4K-5, all Montessori levels, and as a site for extended care. Fall 2023, the Montessori program (Levels 4K-6) were moved to Cooper Montessori and Dyer Elementary housed 4K-5. The Montessori program (4K-6) moved to Cooper Montessori in Fall 2023, at which time Dyer Elementary served grades 4K-5. By Fall 2024, Dyer Elementary's student population shifted to include all 4K students and grades K-4. The 81,451-square-foot building sits on about 10 acres with ample space for outdoor activities.
