Scheduling Information for Next Year Juniors

Current sophomores will attend a scheduling meeting in advisory on Wednesday, January 22nd that explains all that is needed to request classes for the following year.  During Junior year, students typically take English (Literature & Composition or AP Language and Composition), math (whatever is next in their progression. Typical Math progression: Algebra 1 --> Geometry --> Applied Math or Algebra 2 --> Pre-Calculus), science (they get to choose), wellness (anything they want), a financial literacy class (Personal Finance, Consumer Economics, Economics, or AP Economics), and social studies (Modern World History, AP World History, or AP European History) with a choice of one to two credits of electives.

GUIDELINES FOR COURSE SELECTION

(These are suggestions from the BHS Counselors)

• When reading course descriptions, pay close attention to prerequisites for previous courses taken, specific grades earned, and/or student grade levels
• Use a pencil when filling out the Course Request Worksheet.
• Read and use pages 4 of the Course Planning Guide to make sure that your course selections meet your graduation requirements and your post-secondary plans.
• English:  Talk to your current English teacher about your class(es) for next year. Your English teacher will verify your choice after all course selections have been made.
• Math:  Talk to your current Math teacher about your class for next year. Your Math teacher will verify your choice after all course selections have been made.
• Wellness:  Read the course descriptions for all options, and choose the one that is best for you. Make sure you also choose an alternate PE course, and write it in the Alternates Course Request box on the course selection sheet AND request that as one of your last alternates in Xello.
• Science:  Talk to your current Science teacher about the options for next year.  Read the course descriptions for each class, and choose the one that is best for you. Note: Chemistry can only be taken if Algebra is completed.
• Social Studies:  Talk to your current Social Studies teacher about the options for next year.  Read the course description for all three classes, and choose the one that is best for you.  Note:  AP World History and AP European History will require you to do summer work in preparation for next year’s class.
• Health:  Only sign up for health if you have not taken it this year.
• Financial Literacy:  Read the course description for all four options, and choose the one that is best for you. On Xello, you will not see a yellow box for the Financial Literacy class.  Please use an elective white box to request the course.
• Computer Skills:  This is only for students who have not taken or passed the Freshman Connections course.
• Electives:  Choose courses that best fit your career goals and interests, and read all course descriptions of courses that you are signing up for.
• Alternate Course Requests:  Choose courses that you would enjoy taking, and read all course descriptions and prerequisites. You must choose three credits (not classes) in Xello.
• Athletes -  Make sure that your couse selections are classes approved by the NAIA and NCAA if you are planning on pursuing the college athlete pathway.

NOTE:  ALL COURSES LISTED ON YOUR YELLOW COURSE REQUEST WORKSHEET ARE COURSES YOU MAY BE GIVEN, SO CHOOSE WISELY.

Even if you wish to take specific courses (e.g., PE 10-11 and/or Personal Finance) during summer school, you must still select them in your course requests for the following year.
