Service Learning is designed to help students learn the value of volunteering for the betterment of a community. To value service learning, the following are available at BHS:
-
Students receive .5 credit for 75 service learning hours (max of 1 cr.)
-
Students receive a Service Learning Honor Cord for 150 service hours + 4 opportunities.
-
Service Learning Award - students that receive over 200 service hours will be awarded at the Senior Recognition Celebration.
Hours may be earned for volunteer work with non-profit groups only. Service Learning hours may be earned immediately following successful completion of 8th grade.
Service learning hours may be earned by volunteering time for a non-profit organization. Some examples are working for the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts of America, 4-H Club, Love Inc., St. Vincent De Paul Society, Rotary, Kiwanis, or other service organizations. Helping an elderly neighbor with yard work, or heling to work at a church festival also qualify.
Be careful; there are some restrictions. Projects may be denied if they are done for individuals who are otherwise able to hire someone to do their work or are physically able to do it themselves. Working for no charge does not necessarily qualify the project as community service. Hours working for a business or organization that earns a profit will not qualify as community service. To be sure that your hours receive credit, have your project pre-approved at the BHS main office.
